Instructor Policies

Attendance and classroom behaviour
  • Regular attendance and participation is strongly recommended and is a crucial part of academic success.
If you miss a class or a lab, you are responsible for catching up. Please refer to my on-line web-page notes. If you must miss a class, you should e-mail your instructor to see if you are missing forms of evaluation in addition to course material (eg. quizzes, tests).
  • Use common sense while in class.
If you are late or leaving early be considerate regarding your fellow students and your instructor.
  • Any other activities such as playing games, chatting, needless Internet browsing, eating or completing work for other courses will not be allowed.
  • Any disruptive behaviour during classes, including inappropriate language willnot be tolerated.
Staying in contact
  • Please inform me about anything that prevents you from completing your assignments on time and/or attending tests before due dates.
Use email and keep your sent emails as a record. I will not make any verbal arrangements.
  • Do not send Email with attachments from any other e-mail account that your college account.
Sending e-mail to your instructor from your college e-mail account ensures that the e-mail message is secure and cannot be viewed by anyone else. This is important if you are sending me assignment information.
  • Please include the course code in the email subject line when you correspond with me.
Adhering to the above will allow me to answer your email faster and to help you better.
Tests / Quizzes / Final Exams
  • There are no make-up tests for missed tests.
If you miss a test, you have to provide appropriate documentation (for example a doctor’s note) within a week of the missed test. Make sure, that such note explicitly says that you could not attend a test. Students who legitimately miss a test will usually have the missed test mark derived from the remaining test(s) or final exam.
  • If you miss a SUPP or DEF final exam on the scheduled date, you will fail the course.
I will not “make deals” to have students delay the writing of any SUPP or DEF final exam due to travel plans, vacations, etc. This makes extremely difficult for to me to administer or track outstanding DEF or SUPP exams. Please factor in your grade results prior to making any travel arrangements. Remember, that a SUPP or DEF grade is a rare privilege that may be offered by your instructor…
  • If you miss submitting an INC assignment on the scheduled date, you will fail the course.
I will not “make deals” to have students delay proper submission of their incomplete assginments due to travel plans, vacations, etc. This is consistent with Computer Studies departmental policy. Remember, that an INC grade is a privilegethat may be offered by your instructor…
  • If you miss a quiz in the scheduled class, you only have an opportunity to write the quiz at the beginning of the next class. Otherwise, you will receive a grade of zero for that quiz.
Labs and Assignments
  • Please note that I do not generally give extensions for assignments and projects.
If an extension is granted due to abnormal circumstances, a message will be postedto your Moodle account as an announcement.
  • The late penalty is -20% for each 24 hours – this includes weekends and holidays.
Plan your workload accordingly for all of your courses.
  • Labs not submitted by due date will result in a grade of zero.
  • When submitting work electronically, please save your confirmation as proof of submission.
Any confirmation e-mails that are deleted will not count as proof as submission of lab work, assignments, etc… and will not be considered as proof of s student’s completed work.
  • In order to detect incidents of cheating, I may use an application that will “flag” or draw attention to assignments that are very similar.
“Flagging” similar assignments will make it easier for me to build/document a solid case for cheating. I will contact individual(s) involved by e-mail to contact me (only in person) in relation to a cheating incident. In MOST cases, a report will be filled out providing either “an incidence of cheating” or ” a warning of cheating”… These cheating detection applications can be very efficient andaccurate – the best way to avoid cheating is to do your own work, and use your own variable names and approaches when programming or scripting… Do not share your work, and make certain to completely log-off you account to prevent unauthorized access…
Assistance to special needs students
  • I only recognize special needs students that have appropriate documentation
In order to be recognized as having a special need, you need to have been accessed by the “Counselling & Special Needs” office. If you have been identified with a special need, then you need to provide me that documentation.
  • Students that are NOT identified with special needs, and submit their labs late will result in a grade of zero for that lab, and late marks will be deducted for late assignments.
  • Students with special needs will need to notify me in advance if you are writing in the Test Center.
